Acupuncture’s not Supposed to Hurt…Right?
Well…we do use needles!
It’s natural to wonder if acupuncture is painful—especially if you’re new to the practice or have a fear of needles. Some people expect acupuncture to be completely sensation-free, while others worry it might be uncomfortable. The truth is, acupuncture can cause some mild discomfort, but a skilled, licensed acupuncturist will always work within your comfort zone and pain tolerance.
Unlike hypodermic needles used for injections, acupuncture needles are extremely thin—often as fine as a strand of hair. Many patients feel little to no pain upon insertion. Others experience sensations like warmth, tingling, or a dull ache, which are signs that the treatment is activating the body’s natural healing response. We consider those sensations signs we are making contact with the qi- the whole purpose of acupuncture! If any sensation becomes too strong, your acupuncturist can adjust the technique to keep you at ease.
It’s important to remember that any discomfort from acupuncture is intended to be minimal compared to the illness, pain or tension you’re seeking relief from. The goal is to restore balance, release blockages, and provide lasting relief—not to cause unnecessary pain.
If fear of needles has held you back from trying acupuncture, know that a compassionate, experienced acupuncturist will prioritize your comfort. Many patients, even those who were initially nervous, find the experience deeply relaxing and therapeutic.
Your well-being matters, and acupuncture is designed to support it—gently and effectively.
